Noise Control Engineering

For quieter projects and environments.

The core of what we do is applying the science of sound to the world around us. We offer a comprehensive suite of acoustical services including modeling, measurements, long-term monitoring, data analysis, and mitigation planning. These services play a crucial role in informing processes such as planning, permitting, and design, where our passion for consulting shines through.

In addition to our technical acoustical services, we support clients throughout these processes by providing expert testimony, engaging in stakeholder discussions, participating in public meetings, contributing to policy development, and conducting compliance assessments. These services are deployed across various practice areas to contribute to the creation of quieter projects and environments.

Practice Areas

Environmental Permitting & Compliance

Paxwood Acoustics specializes in providing comprehensive acoustical services tailored to environmental permitting and compliance needs. From the initial planning phases to post-construction support, we guide our clients through the intricacies of noise requirements within local, state, and federal regulatory processes.

As Board-Certified Noise Control Engineers (INCE), our staff are highly qualified in the technical aspects of acoustics. Moreover, we go beyond by bridging the gap between science and policy, understanding the regulatory frameworks governing our clients' operations. This enables us to effectively address queries from regulators, key decision-makers, and the public with accuracy and confidence.

With over two decades of experience providing expert testimony across various industries, our staff are adept at making the science of sound accessible to all. Through clear communication and illustrations, we ensure that everyone is well-informed, empowering the making of confident, informed decisions.

Energy

We are highly experienced in conducting acoustic assessments for energy generation and transmission projects, with a proven track record. Our staff have successfully contributed to over 120 wind power projects, 55 solar power projects, and 70 transmission projects. Our technical services encompass a wide range of activities, including pre-construction noise assessments, sound propagation modeling, continuous sound level monitoring, mitigation planning, siting assistance, and post-construction compliance assessments.

In addition to these technical services, we offer support through expert testimony, stakeholder discussions, and active participation in public meetings.

Furthermore, we conduct precise source sound emission measurements in accordance with relevant standards, both in the field and for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Our expertise covers various energy sound sources, including substations (transformers & capacitor banks), inverters, battery storage systems (BESS), wind turbines, tracking motors, and more.

Industry & Manufacturing

Industrial processes, resource extraction, and manufacturing are frequently accompanied by notable sound emissions. The equipment and mechanisms involved varies widely including engines, compressors, crushers, hammers, screeners, cutting tools, breaking tools, exhaust stacks, and air moving equipment, among others. Paxwood acoustics is equipped to address all these sources. Our staff have experience with over 100 industrial and manufacturing projects, both outdoors and indoors, spanning diverse operations such as sand and gravel extraction, rock quarries, resource processing, forestry operations, fabrication, assembly, and life cycle and condition testing.

Our approach to addressing noise challenges in these operations involves identifying sources and quantifying sound emissions through acoustical measurements. We then conduct rigorous data analysis and modeling to assess various conditions and scenarios. Subsequently, we collaborate with clients to develop mitigation strategies, whether by addressing sound sources directly or by modifying the propagation pathways of noise.

Our technical analyses are tailored to help clients achieve their objectives, whether it's fostering good community relations, meeting outdoor noise standards, enhancing the working environment for staff, or complying with occupational regulations such as those set by OSHA or NIOSH.

Recreation & Public Lands

Recreation and public lands present a unique acoustical dichotomy: while some activities generate sound that requires management, others require quiet environments to appreciate natural or historical soundscapes. Paxwood Acoustics adeptly navigates both scenarios with our technical expertise. Our team is experienced in assessing noise from a variety of recreational sources, including ATVs, snowmobiles, snow guns, race tracks, indoor and outdoor concert venues, wedding and event venues, sports facilities, and fireworks.

Paxwood Acoustics also evaluates soundscapes for local, state, and federal public lands, where agencies may need to protect the ability to hear natural and historical sounds. We collaborate with agencies to develop tailored policies, provide staff training, and devise mitigation strategies to achieve their specific objectives.
